Asian American Commercal Watch: Is Hyundai’s Asian “Family” Racist or Not?

Recently, I’ve seen quite a few commercials by Asian car dealerships using Asian-American actor, probably because many Americans see Asians as “good with cars and technology.” However, this commercial really stuck out to me because of the clear lack of unified appearance with this “family.” Most of the family could probably pass as Korean or some other type of Asian, but the older daughter sticks out like a sore thumb. To me, she seems so obviously not related to the other family members; it’s almost amusing. Yet, she was still hired to be on the commercial. It makes me wonder–do advertisers think that all Asian-Americans look the same, and that they could be related? I’d love to know what you think.

By the way, I saw this commercial on ESPN while watching a basketball game the other night. I wonder if the advertising company is using the whole “Linsanity” frenzy to help get interested viewers to buy more Hyundai cars.
