What are the Genie Awards you ask? Well, unless you’re a true foreign film addict, the Genie Awards are given to those whose made significant contributions to the Canadian film industry – the Canuck version of the Oscars, if you will – which is generally dominated by films from Quebec. (long story, won’t get into it here)
So, this year’s Genie Awards will be hosted by Sandra Oh, whom Canada already knew and loved before appearing in Mr. Bean and Arli$$ oh and winning that statue with the ball on top. She herself is a 2x Genie award winner (Double Happiness and Last Night) and I can almost guarantee, the show with her hosting has got to be better than whatever Jon Stewart and the Oscars managed to throw together last minute. I kinda hope she’ll wear the hanbok she wore to the SAG Awards and make a joke about being caught wearing the same dress to 2 events. (the horror!)
Not bad for a girl who grew up in smalltown Ontario.
Unlike the Oscars, it’s not a live broadcast but a live-to-air as I know the parties start celebrating at 10 and that’s when the awards are actually shown on TV. Tis a weekday anyways, and people need to get their drink on, and then stumble to set within the following 8 hours (industry joke, ask a friend).
Maybe the Ellen Page will actually win something on Monday.
