Mike Cho Art Exhibit

Okay, last art-related post for… this week. I really do have other stuff to share, but I wanted to let everyone know about the late Mike Cho’s art exhibit in downtown Los Angeles.

Have we discussed his untimely death here at all? In case you hadn’t heard, late last year, UCLA art grad Mike was shot to death by La Habra police. The circumstances around his death are still unclear, despite the surveillance camera which almost captured the event. Friends and family have formed the Justice for Mike Cho group, which is petitioning for the city to fully investigate the incident.

Though I never knew Mike, I was still pretty shocked to hear about his death. Police shootings aren’t really a headline grabbing event around LA (sad to say), but you rarely hear about it happen in your own community of Asian Americans.

Dangerous Curve has been hosting an exhibition of Mike’s art, which ranged from Korean ceramics to oil paintings and notebook sketches. I hope readers and friends who happen to find themselves near Skid Row/Chinatown (you never know!) will stop by the small gallery, or check out their closing celebration this Saturday, May 17, 2008 (7-10pm).

I stopped by last Saturday to take a look, and though I admit I don’t know too much about art, it’s a very touching display of talent by a boy gone too soon. Whoa, that was really poetic of me, and I hate poetry. Maybe I’m in the wrong career.

About Moye

I am a Japanese-American girl who was born, raised and is most probably stuck in traffic right this second in Los Angeles. I'm currently one of the co-editors of 8Asians and like to distract myself with good food, reading long books, playing video games, catching up on celebrity news, choosing my new new haircut and then writing all about it on Hello Moye and sometimes here on Twitter if I can get it in under 140 words or less. You can reach me at moye[at]8asians.com.
