“And each time you buy Superbad from some dude in Chinatown…”

I saw this FunnyorDie.com video posted in my News Feed on Facebook from my friend – it’s a parody Public Service Announcement (PSA) titled, “Piracy PSA” with Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Note – this is Not Suitable For Work (NSFW). I thought it was pretty funny (and if you haven’t seen SuperBad, it is HILARIOUS – but with a lot of foul language) The parody was made by producer Judd Apatow with Superbad’s Christopher Mintz-Plasse for the “Night of Too Many Stars” benefit for Autism Education.

What’s relevant to 8Asians is Mintz-Plasse making a reference to buying pirated DVD’s from Chinatown. The ironic thing is, the age of buying pirated DVD’s is essentially gone. Most movie piracy in terms of sheer volume is done over the Internet (Mintz-Plasse does make reference to Internet piracy). Chinatown’s do have a reputation for piracy and fakes, but these days, pirated DVD’s are quickly becoming the 8-track(are you old enough to remember those?) of the 2000’s… The one time I did buy a pirated DVD, it was on the street in NYC nowhere near Chinatown (the pirated DVD turned out to be a dud – so I was out a few bucks).

About John

I'm a Taiwanese-American and was born & raised in Western Massachusetts, went to college in upstate New York, worked in Connecticut, went to grad school in North Carolina and then moved out to the Bay Area in 1999 and have been living here ever since - love the weather and almost everything about the area (except the high cost of housing...)
