Project Runway Season 5: Jerry Tam, first designer auf’d

Project Runway Season 5 starts! There’s usually one Asian designer on each season, and in the past, they’ve each gone pretty far… this season’s Asian designer is Jerry Tam, already established designer of Form.

Sadly, he was confident in the beginning…“I’m already pretty established designer but want to use this show to get to the next level” to “Everyone else is putting crap on top of crap for their designs but I would never do that” to realize in the end, being safe, sticking to fabric-like materials from Gristedes (instead of innovating with unusual materials)…Tam ends up getting kicked off because his look was boring, which is the worst crime of all on Project Runway. Even worse than creating fugly clothing for the runway.

What do you think? Personally, I think Designer Stella’s look was horrendous and not only was it a last minute whirlwind of draping and sewing trash bags to resemble something like clothing, but it was so messily done. At least Jerry’s had sewing and some effort associated with his product with somewhat of a form (albeit not well-fitting).

Well, best of luck to you Jerry. The designers who win are good at last minute, quick, innovative/fashions that don’t necessarily translate into success in the world of fashion. I have no doubt you will be successful as designer, as long as you don’t have to choose your materials from a grocery store.

Here are the final looks from the episode, my personal favorite was Kenley’s.

About Jen

I’m a Korean-American living in the bay area, I studied public health and social work in grad school, and I have an obsession for anything theater related, especially ballet and Broadway musicals. I just spent three years in NYC so I am still adjusting to normal winter weather and having a car, and most of the time, I am busy funding my passion for theater with a full-time job in healthcare public relations. On any given day, you can find me watching Project Runway, shopping, doing yoga, skipping to the theater, or looking for the perfect cocktail.
