This past Friday, Democratic National Committee Chairman Governor Tim Kaine dropped by San Jose, California to speak at the Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Democratic Leadership Strategy Meeting organized by DNC Vice Chairman and Congressman Mike Honda with Democrats and local leaders to discuss the upcoming Fall 2010 election.
I also had the opportunity to meet DNC AAPI Caucus Chair Bel Leong-Hong at the event, as well as newly hired Director of Asian American and Pacific Islander Outreach for the DNC, Naomi Tacuyan Underwood. Part of her job is to reach out to bloggers like 8Asians, so I’m excited that the DNC has a full-time person to do outreach to Asian Americans.
Governor Kaine stressed that the Asian American vote can be the difference in the margin for victory in key races within California with Jerry Brown for Governor and Barbara Boxer for Senate, as well as in other races including Nevada and other parts of the nation. Asian Americans make up 12% of California and they tend to vote Democratic. There are great Asian American candidates running for the federal, state and local races as well. And although Asian Americans overall make a small percentage of voters overall, they are usually concentrated in specific geographic regions that make their votes the difference in elections.
