Modern Family Reinforces the Model Minority, But At Least It’s Funny

I’m a big fan of Modern Family, and I’m glad that the mockumentary TV comedy won so many Emmys recently. We’ve blogged about how the show often makes fun of as well as reinforces stereotypes at the same time, and at least I’m guaranteed at least one joke per episode that will crack up really hard. In the most recent episode, Mitchell and Cameron are surprised to learn that their adoptive Asian daughter Lily is not in pre-school unlike all of their friend’s kids, as they all made a pact to send their kids to pre-school at the same time so none of them would be left out.

Mitchell expresses his concern for Lily’s future hilariously, but does reinforce the model minority stereotype.

About John

I'm a Taiwanese-American and was born & raised in Western Massachusetts, went to college in upstate New York, worked in Connecticut, went to grad school in North Carolina and then moved out to the Bay Area in 1999 and have been living here ever since - love the weather and almost everything about the area (except the high cost of housing...)
