Since 2007, Bart Kwan and Joe Jo of Just Kidding Films have been pushing the boundaries of the Asian stereotype on YouTube with their unique perspectives and outrageous comedic flavor. With similar comparisons to Peter Chao and The Notorious MSG, their alter egos (The Uncos) have become a well-known staple in the YouTube community as a spoof of two middle-aged Vietnamese badasses with ridiculously exaggerated accents that love to party and get it on with the ladies.
Their channel currently comprises of more than 208,000 subscribers and a wide array of content ranging from behind-the-scenes updates, social commentaries, mockumentaries (Korean History Channel, Action Hero), music videos (Tastea, Just Kidding Babys) and outrageously off-the-wall skits.
Even before I met them in person, I’ve always been a huge supporter of Bart and Joe as individuals. As Just Kidding Films, their mission towards inspiring others to do what they love comes from the life lessons that they have both encountered growing up in rough areas and realizing what was necessary to survive. Though their material may be considered risqué and slightly off-color, Bart and Joe’s goal is to move beyond the traditional standards of the Asian stereotype, and at the same time, find a way to impart a lesson in each of their short films.
I urge you to take a look inside the mind of Just Kidding Films, and you’ll be surprised with what you find.
