UPDATE 4/25/2012: Congrats to our winner: FL!
In Los Angeles, hidden behind a blank wall, one can find the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACCC), a top purveyor of Japanese arts and culture. From this hidden gem comes a Spring Festival to celebrate the centennial year of the cherry trees presented as a gift from Japan to the United States–LA Bloom.
This nine-day celebration will open with Mare Nubium and end with a Family Day on May 5th, a day also known as Children’s Day in Japan. Alongside performances and demonstrations, the JACCC Plaza will be transformed into an “ecoartspace” featuring one of the world’s largest Zen gardens with over five million pebbles raked carefully into the shape of raindrops.
The opening Mare Nubium show is a special presentation of a section of the Getty Center Kalpa performance, with butoh dancer Oguri:
Mare Nubium is the abbreviated performance of the kalpa, which was performed at the kick off of Pacific Standard Time at the Getty. In Sanskrit, kalpa means eons, or a long period of time. It’s said that once every hundred years, an angel comes down from heavens and swipes the surface of a stone with her silk sleeves until the rock disappears. Hiro Kosaka creates a symbolic parallel between the kalpa and the inevitable passage of time that slowly transforms our lives and the memories that we hold onto. Performers include Butoh (Japanese dancer) master Oguri, who leads a small company of dancers.
JACCC is giving five lucky 8Asians readers a chance to win a pair of tickets to the opening night performance of Mare Nubium!
