Speeches By Asian Americans at the Democratic National Convention & Republican National Convention

As I had blogged earlier last week, I attended the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina for 8Asians.com (I’m still recovering and catching up and will blog my overall experience of the convention soon). The Democratic National Committee and Convention have done an excellent job of making the videos available on YouTube almost as soon as the speeches have been completed, and in this year’s convention, there were a number of Asians Americans who spoke – although none during “primetime”‘

On the first day of the convention, there was Kamala Harris, State Attorney General of California, and Tammy Duckworth, Candidate for the US House of Representatives, Illinois and Former Assistant Secretary of the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

On the second day of the convention, I saw Congresswoman Dr. Judy Chu and General Eric Shinseki speak. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a floor pass in time to be able to get on the show convention floor to take any photos or videos upfront.

Unfortunately, there were no Asian Americans speaking on the third and final day of the convention.

As for the Republican convention, from what I can gather from their YouTube channel, the only Asian American speaker I saw was Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina. I don’t think for either the DNC or RNC, there were any Asian Americans that spoke during primetime. Certainly, throughout the DNC, I was able to meet many, many Asian Americans at various events throughout the convention.

I'm a Taiwanese-American and was born & raised in Western Massachusetts, went to college in upstate New York, worked in Connecticut, went to grad school in North Carolina and then moved out to the Bay Area in 1999 and have been living here ever since - love the weather and almost everything about the area (except the high cost of housing...)
