Back in September when I was at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, I had a chance to see President Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, speak at the Asian American & Pacific Islander caucus. In this Obama re-election web video released last week, Soetoro-Ng shares what it’s like to have a brother who is President of the United States. Soetoro-Ng is half-white, half Indonesian and married a Chinese Canadian, Konrad Ng. That it why Obama within the AAPI community is often called the first “Asian” president since he has deep personal roots to the Asia and Asian American community, having an Asian American sister and brother-in-law and having lived in Indonesia as well as Hawaii.
