Asian American MMA fighters in UFC on FOX 5 won two out of four matches this past weekend. Benson Henderson (pictured above with his mom after the match) dominated Nate Diaz to defend his lightweight belt. Scott Jorgenson, who I just learned is half Japanese, won fight of the night and submission of the night honors for his win over John Albert. Nam Pham and B.J. Penn didn’t fair as well as they were basically overwhelmed in their matches.
Dennis Siver dominated Nam Phan in the preliminary card, winning with scores of 30-24, 30-25 and 30-26. Rory MacDonald also dominated B.J. Penn, with scores of 30-26, 30-26, 30-27. Rory McDonald’s size relative to Penn tells me that he really doesn’t belong in the welterweight division.
Not sure what is next for Phan and Penn. Phan has talked about retiring if he is cut from the UFC. B.J. Penn really has retired once before, and UFC head Dana White wants him to retire.
