Who doesn’t like movies with giant robots? Add dimensional travel, giant monsters a la Godzilla, and humanity’s last stand and you’ve got Pacific Rim, the perfect recipe for a 2013 blockbuster. What I find amazing is that in both story, visuals, and concepts, the movie feels incredibly retro, like a campy B (or lower grade) movie that you might find on Sci-Fi channel about a decade ago.
But instead of being low-budget sad and laughable to watch, it’s got $200 million, state-of-the-art visual effects and production, and a top notch director to boot–Guillermo del Toro. The trailer itself is mesmerizing and terrifying at the same time, immediately giving me the “I’ve got to watch this” reaction. Plus, it reminds me eerily of the classic cult hit anime Evangelion:

Aside from plot detail differences, there are definitely a lot of parallels. I mean, the monsters in Pacific Rim even look like the Eva mechas in Evangelion. We could go into a blah blah this is a rip off blah blah conversation, but whatever. Another cool movie that will entertain, amaze, and inspire us? Shoot. Why not? But when I go watch it in the theaters, I plan to yell out in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Mikey fashion: “The robot’s your mom dude!” Oh, spoiler warning. Nevermind. Too late.
