Asian American Commercial Watch: Retirement Planning with TD Ameritrade

http://youtu.be/QLFIqeQTE4A

When I first saw this ad airing on TV, I thought that having “Bob” dressed up as a vampire was a bit odd (especially since you don’t often see Asian vampires – do they even exist in American television shows and movies?). But as I saw Bob, his wife and two kids, along with his mortgage, I was pleasantly surprised. Because to be honest, I am not sure that I’ve seen a complete Asian American nuclear family in a television commercial since what I consider a revolutionary and breakthrough Target ad back in 2009. The parents look like what any older Asian American adults looking to retire in the near future look like – in fact, I wonder if those adults are even actors and maybe just recruited TD Ameritrade employees or their friends!

(Bob and his wife are played by Clyde Kusatsu and Sharon Omi.)

About John

I'm a Taiwanese-American and was born & raised in Western Massachusetts, went to college in upstate New York, worked in Connecticut, went to grad school in North Carolina and then moved out to the Bay Area in 1999 and have been living here ever since - love the weather and almost everything about the area (except the high cost of housing...)
