Asian American Frozen Foods: Royal Asia’s ‘Prawn Hacao With Soy Ginger Sauce’

I’ve had Prawn Hacao from Costco and decided to buy them again since I don’t think I’ve written a review, like I had with MìLà’s “Soup Dumplings” (Xiao Long Bao (“XLB”)) found also at Costco. At my local Costco in Silicon Valley, this pack of 40 prawn hacaos goes for $13.99. I’m not a huge fan of the soy ginger sauce, but you can use any sauce that you would like.

According to Google, hacao (虾饺) is a Cantonese dumpling made of shrimp meat and steamed in a flour wrapper. It’s also known as har gow, hau kau, or ha kao. Hacao is a traditional dim sum dish. I’ve certainly had them before for a dim sum lunch. These are pretty good given that they are frozen and not fresh.

This is what they look like frozen before I steam them. The instructions say to steam them for 8 minutes. After 8 minutes, they look like:

After eating half of one, this is what one looks like:

As I said, I’ve had these before and like them. I usually have soy sauce with these, but use whatever you think tastes best! For a frozen food, the quality and taste is more than one can ask for!
