While Asian Americans are the most bullied students in school, among them Sikhs are a particularly tempting target, especially after 9/11 where they are often taunted with the label of “terrorist. Gulshan Singh made “Let it Out” as an entry in the Sikh coalition Diversity video contest on minority experience. His video took first place and was recently featured at the 2011 Sikh Arts Film festival. I don’t agree with everything he says, but it’s worth checking out, along with some of the other entries in the contest
What don’t I agree with? He says that in the past, we all got along. I don’t really believe that. Also, he recommends that bullied kids go to teachers who should help. As was seen in the South Philadelphia bullying case, teachers sometimes joined in the bullying. Not really Gulshan Singh’s fault. You should be able to trust teachers to help you.
As I mentioned above, some of the other entries in the Sikh coalition Diversity video contest are worth watching. In the second place entry, Jasleen Kaur talks about the cutting her hair to try to fit in and the consequences of that with her family. The movie “Ocean of Pearls” also deals with a similar subject.

I also liked David Woo’s third place entry, “Neel.” Neel also tells about how teachers and coaches joined into bullying.
