Video of event: C-SPANHouse Speaker John Boehner, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress gathered last week to remember the 25th anniversary of the massacre in Tiananmen Square, passing a bi-partisan bill (House Resolution 599) : “Urging the Government of the People’s Republic of China to respect the freedom of assembly, expression, and religion and all fundamental human rights and the rule of law for all its citizens and to stop censoring discussion of the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstrations and their violent suppression.”
I had blogged my thoughts on the 20th anniversary of the massacre. Minority Leader and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi had some thoughts on the massacre:
“Twenty-five years ago, as we all know, people rose up in Tiananmen Square to demand their rights, to demand dignity and respect, to demand a voice,” said Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday. “They wanted an end to corruption and a beginning of real economic and political reform.” “Twenty-five years later, the spirit of Tiananmen endures, yet the challenge remains,” she said. “The Chinese government censors any mention of June 4th.”
Who knows when the People’s Republic of China will ever become democratic, or when the history of the events that happened on the evening of June 3rd and early morning of June 4th will be known widely within China? As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, ” The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” Hopefully those who died that June in 1989 will have their justice in the near future.
