Rei Kawakubo, founder of the directional fashion label, Comme des Garçons isn’t necessarily an open book. In fact, she is quite recluse. One thing is for certain: she really knows how to make some brilliant anti-fashion including “inside-out” tennis shoes, perfume that smells like insect repellent and other items of clothing which are avant-crazy.
Known for polka dots and drop crotch pants (you probably see derivative versions of her pieces at Urban Outfitters) , Rei is one of those “conceptual” minds when it comes to fashion, meaning that no normal person would wear it. Fashion people and super cool Asian hipsters, on the other hand, eat it up. I have a couple of her pieces in my closet that I bust out when I am feelin’ like a frisky Asian hipster.
She recently sat down with Women’s Wear Daily for a rare interview and said that she isn’t impressed with the new designers out there. Her exact words were: “They lack discipline…They’re not strict enough with themselves.”
