A few years ago, there was the heartbreaking news story of missing San Francisco and CNET News reporter James Kim with his missing family and children after they had left Seattle back to San Francisco on a post-Thanksgiving road trip home. They had taken a wrong turn late in the evening when an unlocked gate was open in rural Oregon, ran out of gas and were desperate for help. Kati Kim and her two children were eventually found inside their car, while unfortunately James Kim died of hypothermia as he sought help for his family.
Last Friday, ABC News did a 20/20 special, Wrong Turn: the Kati Kim Story where Kati Kim tells the first hand account of what happened over 5 years ago. I remember this local story vividly since I recall getting emails about the news from friends of friends. The Bay Area and Silicon Valley is a small world and I knew plenty of ex-Yahoo! employees who knew James at CNET. Sadly, things did not turn out well. Four years later, Kati Kim and her kids have relocated to Portland, Oregon and Kati had the courage to tell her story to the world.
