Our internal e-mail lists have us discussing all kinds of stuff: Asian American identity, representation in the media, the experiences of activism in an academia setting and its progression as we transition to the working, adult world.
And sometimes, we talk about Tila Tequia’s new video for her single Walking on Thin Ice, where Tila gets seduced, then — oh hey, music video spoiler alert — beaten up, by a slightly older, bearded, heterosexual version of Sylar from Heroes.
Also note that if 8Asians was truly tacky, we would make a cheap shot about Tila Tequila not needing any practice getting beaten up after a 2009 incident where NFL’s Shawn Merriman was accused of choking Tila Tequila. But we’re more tasteful than that, so let’s continue, shall we? Great.
Moye: This song is dedicated to Ernie. Also, I swear the ring in the video is the one she got from Casey Johnson. TASTELESS.
Joz: The video is so bad, that even hell disowned it!
Mike: Can we set up a video shoot where Ernie (and other members of 8Asians, perhaps), dance and lip-sync to Tila Tequila songs? That would be so VIRAL.
Moye: I’m turning this into a talkabout, as soon as Ernie realizes we want him to lip-sync this song.
Ernie: Three Words: Asian boy burlesque. One more word: No. Also, there’s no catchy hook to this song and this totally isn’t my voice range and I don’t want to go to Safeway to buy roses.
And for what it’s worth: I disagree with Joz’s assessment that the video is so bad that hell disowns this. It did grab my attention for a full 75 seconds, and the first line of the song had a very haunting, almost trip-hop quality to it. But then I realized I was watching a Tila Tequila video and watched videos of cats playing the piano and teenage girls fighting instead. But what do you think?
