Top Asian Chef Says Asian Restaurants Should Try Harder

The 2011 rankings for The San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants have been announced and includes four Asian restaurants, marking the most number of Asian cuisine places has made the list for the year. While the San Pellegrino rankings have been criticized for their American and European bias, Chef Yoshihiro Narisawa of Les Creations des Narisawa (at #12) blames Asian chefs for their lack of creativity: “I don’t think there are too few Asian restaurants on the list. In Asia, there aren’t enough original, truly unique, dining experiences…” Chinese and Japanese chefs should focus on building a unique taste off of their native cuisines in order to distinguish themselves from the crowd of similar restaurants. I’d have to disagree; there always seems to be more value placed on Western culinary skills and style in the world of food. Then again, I’m not a chef so I have no idea what really goes on. What do you think? Do Asian chefs deserve more representation or do they need to work harder?

I'm currently one of the co-editors of 8Asians and like to distract myself with good food, reading long books, playing video games, catching up on celebrity news, choosing my new new haircut and then writing all about it on Hello Moye and sometimes here on Twitter if I can get it in under 140 words or less.
