Our internal e-mail lists have us discussing all kinds of stuff: Asian American identity, representation in the media, the experiences of activism in an academia setting and its progression as we transition to the working, adult world. And sometimes, we talk about hipsters.
Oh, come on; we haven’t really talked about Asians hipsters much on 8Asians lately, if you don’t count that one post we had about the hipster grifter with the tattoo on her chest and that random girl in the Target Christmas ad. This changes now, thanks to the new blog Accidental Chinese Hipsters (of which my mom is such a member) and one unassuming PR guy wanting us to write a post on his fixed bike documentary. Watch it all dissolve to a bunch of accusations and in-jokes, after the jump!
PR Guy: “I wanted to let you know about a new feature film called to “To Live and Ride in LA”, which focuses on Fixed-gear bikes, an aggressive and very dangerous style of biking that’s taking a hold in LA, SF and NY. The film features Ace, one of the top riders in the world, who is also breaking racial barriers, as he is one of the pioneering Asian-American riders in the game. I’d love to set you up with an interview with Ace who can provide insight into the Fixed-gear bike culture.”
Moye: A documentary about fixed gear bikes? Now I’ve seen everything. You SF hipsters are everywhere.
Susan: Now that you called it hipster, it isn’t hipster any more.
Efren: No, if Ernie called it hipster, then it’s no longer hipster, since Ernie is clearly an SF Mission hipster.
Moye: Ernie is such a hipster. Have you seen how tight his jeans are? I almost lost him in the Echo Park crowd when he was here in LA.
Ernie: What did you guys say? I can’t hear you guys because I can’t hear you through my headphones that are playing Arcade Fire and my complaining about how they are too mainstream now.
Moye: Ernie blogged about Asian American issues before it was cool.
Efren: No bitch, _I_ blogged about Asian American issues before it was cool. 😉
Ernie: Now that THAT is settled, here’s your skinny pants, suspenders and handlebar mustache; I’ll see you at the artisan beer and cupcake meet-up at Silverlake on Thursday afternoon, when everyone else has a job.
Efren: As long as we wear the same thing to confuse the fuck out of everybody.
