Scarily enough, it’s already time to think about shopping for back to school, as much as my own soon to be first-grader wants more play and vacation time. It turns out if you’re an Asian American parent, your kids tend to spend more than the average teenager on clothing for back-to-school. According to a survey by YPulse, Asian American teenagers spend on average around $140.97 per month on clothing, compared to $111.58 for the average white teenager.
My daughter may not be a teenager yet, but I can tell she’s already gunning to be in the top spender category. She’s already a power shopper, and back-to-school shopping brings out all her spending tendencies. She can run around a store, picked up everything she wants and have a shopping cart filled in a blink of an eye. As a parent of course, it’s a tough balance between letting her pick what she wants, versus what’s practical for school. So it’s an absolute no on sandals, halter tops, and make-up (all against school policies), and then it’s negotiation on just about everything else.
Her favorite shopping category though is shoes, and I’m not sure how she accomplished it with the budget guidelines I’ve set for spending, but she manages to have more shoes than I do. Her favorites are her Crocs, and that’s one thing we can both agree on. I’m not sure how we can have the same battle every morning, but getting ready for school turns into the slowest activity for her for the day. It takes her forever to pick out an outfit, eat breakfast, brush her teeth, etc. So I’m always grateful, that we’ve got a pair of Crocs she can just slip into to get her out the door. She loves them because of their bright colors and the ability to customize them (she has those plastic pins you can put in them, and of course hers include her favorite Disney Princesses).
So, as we spend (and probably reach past the average for Asian American teenagers) on back-to-school items, I’m definitely including Crocs, along with new jeans, dresses, and school supplies on the shopping list. I’m also stocking up on rou-song, one of her favorites for her lunches, at least until she figures out it’s not socially acceptable within her peer group.
