Says Rahat: “The Shepard Fairey poster for Luc Besson’s The Lady is entirely disappointing and quite dishonest in using a style that was often utilized by the Communist Chinese. Does it look pretty? Sure. But it’s another instance of form failing to follow function for the sake of marketing.”
To which I say: Perhaps. Says Fairey directly: “The film makers asked me to do the movie poster based on my original Aung San Suu Kyi poster, but the illustration is of Michelle Yeoh, the actress who plays [her]. Any project that tells Aung San Suu Kyi’s story and sheds light on Burma, I’m psyched to support. The small clips of the film I’ve seen look amazing.” As for my thoughts: there’s going to be an overlap of people who are familiar with Fairey’s work with people interested in seeing a biopic film about a Burmese politician. When I see the poster I instantly know it’s a Shepard Fairey work, mostly because there is a 20 foot mural of it proudly displayed on the side of a building in Miami.
